What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a doctor-led approach to healthcare that looks for the underlying causes of your symptoms, so treatment can work on why you feel unwell as well as on how it shows up. A functional medicine doctor takes a detailed history, chooses testing that makes sense for you, and builds a personalised plan around your diet, sleep, stress, movement and, where it is needed, medication.

Functional medicine looks at the root cause.

Traditional medicine usually starts with your symptoms, gives them a name and treats them, which is often exactly what you need. Functional medicine goes a step deeper and asks why those symptoms started in the first place.

Two people with the same symptom can have very different causes behind it, so we look at your whole story, from diet and sleep to stress and past illness, to find what is driving yours.

what makes functional medicine different?

What a functional medicine practioner does differently.

The difference lies mostly in the method, and it rests on a simple idea backed by research: many long-term conditions share the same underlying drivers, such as ongoing inflammation, blood sugar problems and changes in the gut. A functional medicine doctor spends the time to find those drivers, so your plan can work on several symptoms at once.

A detailed health timeline

Dr Noyan maps your health from childhood to today, including infections, medication, stress and major life events, because symptoms that look unrelated often started around the same point.

Connecting your body's systems

Your gut, hormones, immune system and metabolism are looked at together, since a problem in one area, such as low thyroid function, can show up as tiredness, weight gain and low mood somewhere else.

Testing that fits your history

Tests are picked to answer specific questions, which might mean a full thyroid panel instead of TSH alone, iron stores, vitamin D, B12 and inflammation markers, or gut and hormone testing where your symptoms point to it.

A plan built for daily life

Your plan focuses on a few specific changes to food, sleep, movement and stress, with supplements or medication added where your results show a need, and your health coach helps you keep going between appointments.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Functional medicine compared with a standard GP appointment.

Your GP remains an important part of your care, and a functional medicine appointment gives you more time, different questions and a different starting point.

Who is functional medicine for?

People usually come to functional medicine at one of three points in their health, and each starting point shapes what Dr Noyan looks at first.

You have chronic symptoms and no clear answer
You may have had years of appointments and tests that came back within range, yet your body still does not feel right and nobody has explained why.
You have a diagnosis and want to understand it manage it better
You know what your condition is called, and you would like to understand what is driving it and what you can change alongside your existing treatment.
You want to optimise how you feel and perform.
Nothing is wrong exactly, but you want a clear picture of your energy, sleep, hormones and long-term health before problems have a chance to develop.

A sense of what can sit beneath common symptoms

One symptom rarely has one cause. Functional health looks for the systemic reasons behind it, which is why two people with the same complaint often need very different plans.

FAQ

Common functional medicine questions answered.

These are the questions people ask most often before booking a discovery call with Dr Noyan.

Is functional medicine available in the UK?

Functional medicine is practised across the UK by doctors and other practitioners, and at Arbor Health your appointments with Dr Noyan take place online, so you can see a functional medicine doctor from London or anywhere else in the country without travelling to a clinic.

What is the difference between a functional medicine doctor and a functional medicine practitioner?

Functional medicine practitioner is a broad term in the UK, and many practitioners come from nutrition or other health backgrounds with additional functional medicine training. A functional medicine doctor is a medically qualified, GMC-registered doctor who brings that training together with clinical diagnosis, prescribing and the ability to read your results in a wider medical context.

Is functional medicine legitimate?

Functional medicine uses the same anatomy, physiology and laboratory science as conventional medicine and applies it with more time and a whole-person focus. The evidence for its individual parts, such as structured lifestyle change and correcting deficiencies, is strong, research on the model as a whole is still growing, and we are open with you about where the evidence stands for your situation.

How is functional medicine different from integrative medicine?

The two overlap a great deal, and both look at the whole person rather than one symptom at a time. Integrative medicine usually brings conventional treatment together with complementary therapies, while functional medicine focuses on tracing your symptoms back through the body's systems to the underlying causes, using your history and testing to guide the plan.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

You do not need a referral to book a discovery call or an appointment with Dr Noyan, and you are welcome to share letters or results from your GP or specialist so they can be reviewed before you meet.

Is functional medicine covered by private health insurance?

Yes. You are always free to select your preferred doctor when booking. You can browse doctor profiles, read about their specialties and experience, and book directly with the one that feels right for you.

Is a functional medicine doctor the same as a naturopath or holistic doctor?

A naturopath or holistic practitioner usually focuses on natural therapies and is not medically qualified, whereas a functional medicine doctor is a registered doctor who uses conventional diagnosis and prescribing alongside nutrition and lifestyle medicine. Both take a whole-person view, and a doctor can also order and interpret medical tests and work directly with your GP or specialist.

How do I choose a functional medicine doctor in the UK?

Start by checking that the doctor is registered with the General Medical Council, which you can do on the GMC website, and look for recognised functional medicine training such as certification from the Institute for Functional Medicine. It also helps to ask how they choose tests, how long appointments last and what support you get in between, because those answers show how thorough your care will be.

What happens at a first functional medicine appointment?

Your first appointment with Dr Noyan is a long, unhurried conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and the life events that may have shaped your health. He reviews your questionnaire and any results beforehand, uses the appointment to fill in the gaps, and then recommends the tests that make sense for you.
